The week, Sonos announced a new partnership with Danish design company HAY that will see the Sonos One speaker be made available in several new, more-expensive color options. The HAY Sonos One Limited Edition Collection takes the same great-sounding intelligent speaker and throws a few new colors at it—red, green, and yellow—direct from HAY’s 2018 palette.
“Our speakers aren’t designed to claim attention but to blend naturally into their surroundings,” Sonos VP of Design Tad Toulis said in a statement. And even with the addition of new nontraditional Sonos colors, the speakers still manage to keep their subtle aesthetic.
Of the three new colors, red certainly has the most pop, but the matte-esque finish of the speaker means the colors don’t really distract from their surroundings. There’s no shine to these speakers, which isn’t a bad thing, because they do most of their talking through the crisp sound profile—or when you activate Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant and she’s literally talking back to you.
“Color is one of the most important tools in the design process, and it was very important we didn’t just create a color scale that looked beautiful,” HAY co-founder and creative director Mette Hay said in the statement. “Colors can hide completely and disappear or provide contrast.”
The new color options will be available in September.
While new color options are always a cool update for a product, this HAY partnership isn’t the announcement that most of us have been waiting for with the Sonos One speaker. When it launched last year, the major draw with this product was its future potential as an all-encompassing smart speaker. Sonos said it would come with Amazon Alexa integration (which it did) and that support for Google Assistant for sure, and possibly even Apple’s HomeKit/Siri at some point further down the line.
We’re still waiting on any additional voice assistant support, but I guess new colors can hold us over for now…
