Ultra HD Conference Looks to the 4K Future
The industry is still recovering from the major flop that was the 3D TV rollout, a development that Shapiro called “an uncomfortable subject” that adversely affected the industry’s credibility with consumers. Vandenbree posited that 3D was simply “the next great feature,” while Ultra HD is “the next big thing.”
Vandenbree believes that manufacturers will sell 800,000 Ultra HD units next year (CEA projects 57,000 sales in 2013). If that mark is reached, he says, content producers will take notice and step up their efforts to produce native 4K content.
Vandenbree and the manufacturers’ panel both cited the need for the industry as a whole to educate consumers and stick to a common story about the technology. Vandenbree opined that “only the industry can derail Ultra HD” by “fanning the flames of consumer confusion.”
