UNBOXED: Reviewing the Apple AirPods
This is a review that I never thought I’d write, but it’s the one that the Apple AirPods have earned. After a little more than a month of wearing them as “daily drivers,” I’m left rather unimpressed by Apple’s first attempt at cracking into the wireless earbuds market. And let’s not forget that this is coming from someone who wholly bought into the company’s pitch that ditching the headphone jack on their latest flagship smartphone was a brave and bold move.
The AirPods were dogged from the start with their delayed launch and incredibly low availability, but that’s not something that I’d factor into a rating. The view from the outside is one where it’s easy to place some blame on Apple feeling rushed to get a product out the door, but that’s not something that I truly think they would do. If there were issues with the AirPods, Apple wouldn’t have announced them in the first place if that were the case. I’m sure they were just as frustrated with the delayed launch as the rest of us, but they’re available now.
So let’s move past that and get to the product at had—or, rather, in ear.
