UNBOXED: Reviewing the iKeyp Pro Smart Safe
To be completely upfront with this review, I wanna start by saying I had incredibly low expectations for this product—not the type of feeling that I’d typically go into a review with. But by the time you read this, know that the iKeyp Pro smart safe pleasantly surprised me, though it did leave a few big questions on the table that certainly need to be addressed.
But let’s dive into it.
The iKeyp Pro is, simply put, a safe that’s been upgraded to take it well into the 21st Century. In a world where all things have to be “smart,” this product applies that moniker to an item that doesn’t necessarily need to be smartified. And that, in all honesty, was my biggest concern with iKey. Why take a safe—something that’s simple and has one purpose in life—and complicate it by adding more technology to it, an app, and batteries. There are some added complications when it comes to using iKeyp, which we’ll get into, but the makers did succeed, in the grand scheme of this product, in adding a smart element to the safe without totally missing the point of what a safe is intended for. iKeyp is smart in a way that’s enjoyable.
The user can experience the act of unlocking the safe in a few different ways. There’s the traditional key that unlocks the little white box, but that’s the least smart way possible. You can input a pin similar to hotel-based safes you might be used to, but that’s nothing new with the safe. What’s new about this safe is that the user can launch the iKeyp app on their smartphone to unlock this safe.
Setup of the iKeyp app was fairly painless. You connect to the product over its internal WiFi system—similar to how you might connect to a 360-degree camera, for example. Once connected, you simply tap the unlock icon and watch the door pop open. It’s simple and somewhat satisfying to watch the technology take over. What’s more, the app makes it possible for the user to share the ability to unlock the safe with others and to open the app from remote locations in case you know that someone needs to get in there to get something.
But what’s truly smart about the iKeyp Pro—and what makes it worth pitching to potential buyers—is it’s ability to notify users when the safe is being tampered with (like, if someone’s trying to move it or if they enter an incorrect code), and its use as a medication reminder for users. These are features—particularly the tampering alerts—that a traditional safe can’t provide and that add a layer of additional value to iKeyp that make it potentially worth the $149 investment.
Only a few things hold the iKeyp Pro smart safe back from being a flawless product. For starters, the batteries seemed to drain rather quickly despite not using the product all that often—and when you use four AA batteries to keep this thing running that can get a little expensive. Additionally, the true security of this thing has been called into question according to some other reviews we’ve seen. Without being mounted to a wall, someone could theoretically just grab it and walk out the door; and the door did open after a somewhat hard punch to the top of the product.
Those few things aside, though, the iKeyp is a product that would seem to make sense in the home for those looking to protect medications, or possibly for someone who’s running their own Airbnb or bed and breakfast type of business. It’s not a major investment but can provide a certain sense of smart security to the eventual end user.
