Senators Question Phone Exclusivity
Unhappy that the iPhone is only available on AT&T, or that the Pre is Sprint-only? Four United States Senators feel the same way, and let the FCC know it last week.
The four Senators- Democrats of John Kerry of Massachusetts, Amy Klobuchar of MInnesota and Byron Dorgan of North Dakota, who were joined by Republican Roger Wicker of Mississippi- wrote a letter to FCC Commissioner Michael Copps in order to "express our concern regarding the use of exclusivity arrangements between commercial wireless carriers and handset manufacturers with respect to wireless handsets."
The letter, which did not mention any specific phones or carriers, asked the FCC to answer several questions, including whether exclusivity agreements are becoming more prevalent, whether they are restricting consumer choice or preventing consumers from taking full advantage of technologies, and whether the agreements are "manipulating the competitive marketplace."
