Universal Plans Blu-ray Jump
The only movie studio that was exclusive to HD DVD for the entirety of the high-definition disc format war is finally making its debut on Blu-ray Disc. Universal Studios Home Entertainment, which is owned by NBC Universal, on Thursday announced its first slate of movies for release on Blu-ray. The studio is touting the release of the first season of “Heroes,” scheduled for Aug. 26, as its first major release, but before that will come several catalog titles. These include “The Mummy” and “The Mummy Returns,” as well as “The Scorpion King.”
Coming later in this year in the format will be several blockbusters scheduled for theatrical release this summer, including “The Incredible Hulk,” “Wanted,” and “Mamma Mia,” as well as catalog titles such as “American Gangster,” “40 Year Old Virgin,” “Knocked Up,” and “Miami Vice.” All titles will be available on the same day in both Blu-ray Disc and standard DVD.
