Grim Game News as U.S. Sales Plunge 31% in June
Videogame sales plummeted 31% in June, the steepest decline since September 2000. The only $1.17 billion in sales last month, the games industry may finally be feeling the impact of the recessionary economy, according to NPD researchers, who issued the sales summary report.
Citing the absence of a "must-have" new title or hardware price cuts, NPD concluded that, "The size of the decline could also point to consumers deferring limited discretionary spending until a big event compels them to spend." Only Microsoft's Xbox 360 saw a slight sales increase compared to June 2008. Sony's PlayStation 3 comparable sales were down 59% and Nintendo Wii sales fell 45%. Overall game software sales were $625.7 million, off by 29% against the previous June, according to NPD.
