Vizio Sued by Rivals
A group of major established TV manufacturers on Wednesday filed suit against upstart TV maker Vizio, alleging that the California-based company infringed on their patents for MPEG-2 video compression, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The suit was filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, by Mitsubishi Electric Corp, Philips, Samsung Electronics and Sony Corp. The compression standard in question involves the ability to store movies on discs, as well as transmit HDTV signals.
In a statement issued by its spokesman, Vizio took the possession that it has licenses for the patents that they believe extend to Vizio’s products. The company is also “working to resolve this matter with the plaintiffs and its suppliers, and it intends to defend its legal rights with vigor,” the statement said.
