Wal*Mart Goes After Ad Leakers
Wal*Mart is threatening to sue several Web sites if they leak its Black Friday advertising circulars early, as they have in past years, CNNMoney.com reported.
The sites, including www.gottadeal.com and www.dealtaker.com are aimed at finding the best deals for customers, often using information not yet released to the public. The sites and others like them often publish early information on sales for “Black Friday,” the retail nickname for the day after Thanksgiving, which is traditionally the highest-volume shopping day of the year.
Wal*Mart’s lawyers, from the firm of Baker Hostetler, sent legal notices to the editors of at least two of the sites, citing copyright laws that they say prevent unlawful publication of the materials. Wal*Mart’s Black Friday circular will be released Nov. 19.
