Wal*Mart Tried Mobile Text System in December
America’s largest retail chain conducted an experiment in mobile consumer text messaging during last year’s holiday season, during which customers were e-mailed messages about short-term sales, the Web site StorefrontBacktalk.com reported late last week.
From the trial, Wal*Mart learned both that it was sending more messages than customers wanted, and was cramming too much information into each message. The amount of customers participating was in the hundreds of thousands, and was conducted only with those who opted to participate, a number that Wal*Mart put at around 10 percent of those approached.
Mobile shopping has been considered a strong technology of the future by many retailers and manufacturers, including Apple and Sprint, although the technology has not yet been perfected by anyone.
