For anyone out there who, for whatever reason, thought tooth and nail to promote the idea that Walmart was in no way, shape, or form trying to compete with Amazon, today’s the day that the argument can finally be put to rest. According to multiple reports, Walmart is in the very early stages of working with Humana, Inc., to acquire the health insurer.
The deal is significant for a number of reasons, but first and foremost it would mark a clear direction change for the world’s largest retailer. To date, the company hasn’t made any Amazonesque moves that would take it outside of the scope of the retail industry. This would clearly change that. Whereas Amazon is working with JPMorgan Chase and Berkshire Hathaway to develop a new health insurance offering for consumers, Walmart would be able to dive right into the game on the back of the work Humana is already doing.
