With how attached we are to our smartphones, conventional wisdom would tell you that a dead smartphone would be enough of a reason for a consumer to cut a shopping trip short. Who wants to walk around with a dead phone in their pocket? Imagine all of those important texts, phone calls, and Facebook updates you’re likely (not) missing.
Turns out, retailers can very easily turn that scenario on its head and use it to their benefit.
In a recent study that was highlighted by Forbes, mobile charging stations can provide a huge boost in business to the retailers who have them in their stores. The study, conducted by GfK on behalf of mobile charging station provider ChargeItSpot, looked into whether these machines—which basically serve as charging lockers for the user’s device—could keep shoppers in the store longer, boost their spending, and turn stores into charging destinations.
