Weak Economy Leads to Tube TV Comeback
The weak economy is causing some consumers to go back in time with their TV purchases- all the way to tube TVs.
According to DisplaySearch statistics cited by the New York Times’ Bits blog, CRT TVs sold so well in the first quarter that they actually overtook plasma TVs for the second spot behind LCD in North American shipments.
According to a DisplaySearch researcher, the sales were driven mostly by consumers seeking to purchase a cheap, digital-capable TV prior to the analog shutoff in February. The firm also attributed the CRT resurgence to closeout sales by some brands, and strong sales in Canada, where the TVs are exempt from digital tuner requirements.
