Where Are All the Missing iPhones?
It’s the mystery of the missing iPhones- why were 1.7 million of the reported 3.7 million iPhones sold last fall never activated, according to AT&T? According to a Piper Jaffray analyst quoted by the Apple Insider Web site, the answer is that some are were sold in Europe, while others were “unlocked” in the states.
Analyst Gene Munster told the Web site that he believes 838,000 of the devices were purchased with the intention that would eventually be unlocked from AT&T’s network, while an addition 350,000 were sold in Europe. The remaining 500,000, Munster said, are spread out across the company’s worldwide distribution channels.
Apple says it sold 3.7 million iPhones in October, November and December.
