DEG: Blu-ray Numbers Soar
While overall spending on DVD, Blu-ray Disc and digitally distributed programming has dropped by around 4 percent in the first half of this year, Blu-ray Disc sales have experienced a 91 percent jump. That's according to numbers released this week by DEG: the Digital Entertainment Group.
Overall consumer spending was pegged by the group at $9.73 million, a drop of 3.9 percent. Meanwhile, 20 million Blu-ray Discs shipped in the second quarter of the year alone.
Despite an extraordinarily challenging marketplace, the home entertainment sector continues to be remarkably stable overall, particularly with the growth of higher margin businesses like Blu-ray and digital distribution,” DEG's president, Ron Sanders, said as part of the announcement. “While home entertainment is down compared to last year, the growth we saw in the second quarter is encouraging.”
