Who Will Win the On-Demand Download Competition?
With seemingly every big name in the CE industry entering the direct-download video market, who can expect to come out on top? According to an analysis in BusinessWeek, the favorites to gain primacy in the market are Apple, Amazon and Netflix.
In a piece by author Chris Albrecht, BusinessWeek picked them as likely winners based on their being “well-funded, well-equipped, and well on their way to becoming the center of your home video universe.”
Amazon was singled out due to the video-on-demand service it recently announced, on which it has partnered with Sony. That service, however, does not yet offer content in HD. Netflix was chosen thanks to its announced set-top distribution deals with LG, Microsoft and Roku, with its stated weakness being a smaller available catalog than Amazon’s service. Apple, with its Apple TV box, was picked by Albrecht thanks to its compatibility with iTunes, although the device itself hasn’t sold particularly well thus far.
