Inside the NRF/RILA Split
Why did the proposed merger between the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) collapse earlier this year? According to a report by InternetRetailer.com, the biggest reasons were differences in priorities between the two groups, including different views on health care reform.
RILA represents most of the largest retail chains in the country, while NRF is more associated with small and medium-sized companies. And one major difference between the two groups was whether or not to support President Obama's call for employer mandates for health care. Members of RILA, led by Walmart, supported employer mandates, while many of the NRF dealers opposed to the idea. Days after the merger was called off, Walmart publicly announced its backing of mandates.
