Wii Continues To Lead in Console War
According to July figures released by the NPD Group Thursday, the Nintendo Wii continues to lead the three-way console war over the Xbox 360 and Sony Playstation 3, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday.
The Wii’s victory was no surprise, but what surprised some analysts was that the PS3 failed to overtake the 360. Microsoft sold 170,000 Xbox units in North America in July, edging out the PS3’s 159,000. The two combined, however, paled in comparison to the Wii, which moved 425,000 consoles. Nintendo also overtook the 360, for the first time, in worldwide numbers.
Sony, backed by some independent analysts, had been arguing for weeks that due to its recent price cut, July was the PS3’s best chance to move into second place in the race. But while Sony made up some ground, the PS3 was unable to close the gap with the Xbox.
