Great Expectations For 4K
DEALERSCOPE: Will the 2014 TV market as a whole be more profitable than the 2013 market, or unaffected by the presence of many more UHD models?
Das: From a retail perspective, it’s Samsung’s hope and desire that our retail partners will be more profitable in 2014 than last year, in no small part driven by the higher ASPs of UHD, especially curved UHD and larger screen sizes. Their profitability is paramount to us.
Alessi: I can tell you for sure that 4K will help keep value in the category. TV has historically been under a lot of price pressure so we’re always looking for new ways to add value in the sets. This will be another leap forward. There’s the move from 1080p to Ultra HD, a more expensive technology. People have already demonstrated that they’re willing to pay more for it. It also supports a trend already happening—the move toward larger screen sizes. Everyone’s looking for a bigger screen size they can afford and fit in their space. Ultra HD will help them take a step up in screen size they might not have. That adds up to more revenue fore dealers.
