Withings Now Offers Breathing Disturbance Detection
With Sleep Week kicking off in just a few days, Withings launched an appropriate new upgrade. The connected-health revolution leader announced the addition of breathing disturbance detection on its Withings Sleep mats through a free update to the Health Mate App.
Breathing disturbances are fairly common but are often overlooked or deemed harmless. Over time though, these disturbances can become more frequent and intense causing a slew of health problems.
Developed and tested by leading sleep physician, Dr. Pierre Escourrou, the new features will provide early detection of potential issues that are otherwise difficult to diagnose. The Wi-Fi enabled Withings Sleep mat ―which fits neatly under a mattress― uses the ballistocardiography method to monitor a user’s sleep cycle, heart rate, and snoring. Now, the app will be able provide additional details including respiration and heart rate as well as motion and snoring to track and chart the intensity of breathing disturbances from low to high.
With sleep apnea going largely undiagnosed, Withings decided to incorporate in-depth information on sleep apnea in the app update as well including its signs and correlation to serious complications. The sleep condition has been associated with type 2 diabetes, obesity and depression while increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and premature death.
"Despite its prevalence and serious consequences, sleep apnea goes largely undetected as current tests are confined to the clinical and sleep lab environment," says Eric Carreel, president of Withings. "By allowing people to track the intensity of breathing disturbances, we are helping them identify warning signs early. This announcement is very important as it furthers our mission to bring medical grade analytics into the home and is the first step towards the medical certification of sleep apnea detection which we aim for by the end of this year."
For now though, breathing disturbance updates to the Health Mate App are available now though the App Store and Google Play while the Withings Sleep Mat is available for $99.95 at withings.com, Amazon, and through local retailers.
