Xbox HD-DVD Player Availability, Price Announced
On Wednesday, at the X06 gaming event in Barcelona, Spain, Microsoft announced pricing and availability for the new HD-DVD player for their Xbox console. The player will be available in mid-November in North America for about $200. In addition to the Xbox, which costs about $400, this puts the total package at the same $600 price point as the high-end version of the Sony PlayStation 3 -- whose Blu-ray player is built-in -- also to be released in November.
In addition to logistical details, Microsoft announced some exclusive gaming deals, including two new games from director Peter Jackson and screenwriter Fran Walsh, who collaborated on “King Kong” (which, for a limited time, will come bundled with the HD-DVD player) and the “Lord of the Rings” franchise. The pair will create a new chapter of Halo and a brand new game, both exclusively for the Xbox.
