Xiaomi Comes Through With Its First Foldable Phone
The foldable phone announcements appear to be really picking up some steam here.
We’re coming off of a CES in which the world’s first foldable smartphone was on display. Royole, a company known for its flexible screens and sensor technology, had the FlexPai smartphone, which isn’t available in the U.S. yet, aside from developer versions of the device. And while Samsung did tease its foldable device under heavy shadows, we weren’t able to get too good of a look at their foldable phone.
Fast forward to the few days after CES 2019, and we’ve already heard from Motorola, though not directly, about the forthcoming relaunch of the ridiculously popular RAZR phone, which will have a foldable form factor.
And now, Xiaomi.
In a very brief, one-minute video, the company teased their foldable phone device. Taking a somewhat unconventional approach to the new category, Xiaomi’s device has two folds in in that convert the boxy tablet touchscreen device into a more manageable—and somewhat decent looking—smartphone. Other than the video itself, the company offered no details about the device, except to say that the phone they displayed is simply an engineering model.
So, add the Chinese firm to a growing list of companies with foldable phone offerings on the horizon. Expect to hear a lot more about these devices in the days and weeks leading up to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month.
