Texas Instruments will be webcasting a panel about the wide world of transcoding on Thursday, December 7. What could possibly possess anyone to be concerned about this? Given that it’s the technology that will allow you to transfer the same content between your television, laptop or iPod, a whole lot. Marketing intelligence firm IDC recently released a report called “Transcoding: The Future of the Video Market Depends on It.” The Snakes-on-a-Plane transparency of the title suggests the company’s estimation of the technology’s importance. Transcoding can alter the bit rate, format and/or resolution to allow “Pirates of the Caribbean 2” to play just as well on your HDTV as your mobile phone. If content is king, compatibility, the report suggests, is at the very least an archduke.
