Youth Electronics Gain Steam for the Holidays
Creative new tech toys are hitting store shelves, giving kids (and kids at heart) an exciting array of options for their wish lists this holiday season. From virtual pets that incorporate augmented reality, to Artificial Intelligence robots that foster positive social-emotional development, the best part about these toys is that they enhance the classic forms of play that children have loved for generations.
“Some might think that toys with tech or electronic components can’t help children exercise their imaginations or build new skills, when in fact the opposite is true,” said Adrienne Appell, trend expert at The Toy Association. “Toy makers have gotten very creative in how they incorporate new tech into their products. We’re seeing so many electronic toys coming to market that are educational, skill-building, exciting, dynamic … and above all, fun.”
The proof is in the numbers. According to The NPD Group, Youth Electronics was the fastest growing toy super category in the first half of 2018, up 43 percent in sales. Analysts attribute sales growth to innovative product, like WowWee’s interactive Fingerlings, and hot licenses, like Star Wars, and expect category growth to continue over the next year and a half, stemming mainly from robotic and interactive toys.
