Barnes & Noble Inks Video Deals in Time for Nook HD, HD+ Release

Barnes & Noble is expanding its Nook Video content to include NBCUniversal and 20th Century Fox programs as it also begins shipping its HD and HD+ tablets this week. B&N said customers who preordered the tablets will start receiving them throughout the week. The devices will also hit Barnes & Noble's stores and retailers such as Target, Wal-Mart, and Best Buy.

Chief Executive William Lynch said that B&N had a record number of preorders.

Roku Gets $45 Million Investment from News Corp., BSkyB

Roku's claim as the No. 1 streaming media player July 26 received validation of sorts after securing $45 million in investment funds from News Corp., British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB) and another unnamed investor.

Saratoga, Calif.-based Roku said the investment, which includes both financial and business agreements, would be used to develop new markets, brand awareness and increase engineering and production to support sales growth of both hardware and digital media services on the platform including advertising, games, transactional and pay-per-view video as well as content packages.

For two bucks, Walmart will make your DVDs available in the "cloud." So far, Best Buy remains on the digital sidelines.

If this were a movie, Walmart would play the DVD lover's knight in shining armor.

The Bentonville, Ark., retailer announced Tuesday, from Hollywood no less, that it will offer a "disc-to-digital service" at its 3,500 stores in the United States. For $2 a movie, Walmart Stores Inc., which is partnering with Vudu, will store your DVD movies in the "cloud," or Vudu's remote servers, where they can be downloaded to any Internet-connected device
