Mickey Shorr, the 16-store mobile electronics specialty retailer owned by ABC Warehouse, is making the very best of a very bad situation.

Detroit, the city around which most Mickey Shorr stores orbit, lost a quarter of its population from 2000 to 2010, and unemployment in the Detroit-Livonia-Dearborn metro area hovers around 12.7%.

Nationwide, mobile electronics remains a tough business. After U.S. factory sales tanked 36% from 2008 to 2009, 12-volt is on the upswing, although CEA projects 2011 wholesale in-vehicle electronics revenues will total 27% less than 2008’s high.

Michigan-based mobile electronics chain Mickey Shorr said Friday that it has been named by Directed Electronics as #1 in per-store sales of the Viper vehicle security and remote start product.
