It took Microsoft a little longer to burn through its first batch of Bands than Google to sell out of Nexus 6 inventory, but we smell a similar marketing tactic employed. Both Redmond and Mountain View are quoting “overwhelming demand” as the cause for stock shortages, “neglecting” to touch on numbers of units pre-ordered.

Microsoft Corp's quarterly profit fell a greater-than-expected 22 percent, as sales of computers running its Windows operating system dipped and some revenue was deferred ahead of upcoming releases of its core Windows and Office products.

The sharp decline surprised investors, who had underestimated the effect of weak personal computer sales, sending Microsoft's shares down 1.3 percent in after-hours trading.

"To us it seems like the macro conditions certainly deteriorated and no tech company will be immune to it," said Trip Chowdhry, analyst at Global Equities Research.

Google, Samsung to Sell Laptop for $249 at Best Buy

Google is dangling a low-priced laptop computer in front of consumers as rivals Microsoft and Apple prepare to release their latest gadgets. The lightweight computer unveiled Thursday will sell for $249 and is being made in a partnership with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., which also makes smartphones and tablet computers that run on Google's Android software.

The laptop will run on an operating system revolving around Google's Chrome Web browser. Like other so-called Chromebooks this laptop doesn't have a hard drive. It functions like a terminal dependent on an Internet connection
