Sanyo May Cease to Exist Under Panasonic Reorganization

Sanyo Electric Co may cease to exist under a reorganization by Panasonic Corp that includes global jobs cuts, Nikkei reported on Friday.

Panasonic will cut 90 percent of Sanyo's global workforce of about 2,500 in around three years, the daily reported.

About 1,000 workers at Sanyo's headquarters will be reduced to around 100 this fiscal year, leaving just a skeleton crew for handling legal matters, managing intellectual property and other tasks. Panasonic may decide to absorb the unit entirely, the Nikkei said.

Haier Establishes Asian HQ in Japan, Continues 2-Brand Strategy

Appliance giant Haier Group will establish its Asian headquarters in Osaka, Japan, along with two R&D centers in Tokyo and Kyoto., and will continue growing the Aqua appliance brand it acquired from Sanyo. Haier said the new sites in Japan now encompass the three key elements of its business - R&D, manufacturing, and marketing.

At a press conference in Tokyo on Feb. 15, 2012, Haier also announced its would continue with a second brand for Japan, Aqua. The brand came to Haier when it purchased Sanyo's washing machine and consumer refrigerator businesses

Apple has managed to keep its significant lead in smartphone satisfaction in spite of improving performance from its Android counterparts. JD Power in a new study saw end users give Apple a score of 838, over 40 points past its spring results and its sixth consecutive spot at the top of the ranks. HTC also improved, but at 801 had garnered at a slightly slower rate. The shift by the two raised the bar and put many other companies, even those that had improved, below the fold.
