Sony's Blues Caused By Blu-ray
April 12, 2012

In the world of consumer electronics, Sony was once the name on the must have products. Not every idea was a winner... who remembers the 1980's bitter battle between Sony's Betamax and JVC's VHS video systems. Betamax was the better quality system, but the longest tape ran for  just  2 hours...not long enough for certain movies to be recorded. The loss in the 1980's video battle was a bitter pill to swallow even if the company did have several later triumphs, namely the Walkman and PlayStation. The determination to never lose

Sexy Lumia has Microsoft and Nokia Gunning for iPhone
April 5, 2012

A sexy, award-winning smartphone is going on sale Sunday at half the price of the iPhone, and it's launching on a blazing fast 4G network. What's the catch? Two things: The phone, called the Lumia 900, is made by Nokia -- and it's running Microsoft's Windows Phone software.

They may be household names, but Microsoft and Nokia are unproven in the U.S. smartphone space. Nokia hasn't ever sold a major smartphone in the United States, and it has been almost invisible in the North American market for the past five years.

Nothing has been made official just yet, however judging from the above image, it looks like Sony has a tablet/notebook hybrid device in the works. The details are coming by way of the PocketNow blog who suggest given a look at the sony.co.uk/thinkdo website.

The Best Ultrabooks of CES 2012
January 12, 2012

By my count, there have been more than 20 ultrabooks announced here at CES 2012. That's a lot of laptops, especially when you consider that most of them have the same attributes: thin cases, Core i5 processors, and solid-state drives. But one has to be the best right? One would think, but choosing just one ultrabook amongst all of them isn't really fair. Some are cheaper than others, some aren't coming until the end of the year, and some have some unique features. Picking four of the best, on the other hand

Sony Takes Another Stab at Glasses-free 3D TV
January 11, 2012

Are you interested in 3D, but hate the glasses? For a second year in a row, Sony is showing off glasses-free 3D TVs at CES.

There are two displays here: a 24-inch LCD capable of 1080p and a 46-inch LCD with up to 4K resolution. Adjacent literature was at least truthful in admitting that the autostereoscopic 3D setup is showing at a "HD equivalent" quality. This is because the parallax barrier, which causes the 3D effect, effectively halves the resolution to ensure each eye is receiving separate images.

Sales of Sony products over its direct web site and call center from Black Friday through Cyber Monday increased 40 percent.

Sony Looks to Boost Sales in Non-Consumer Markets
November 28, 2011

Sony is looking to boost its flagging consumer sales by targeting non-consumer electronics segments.

After recently reporting its fourth successive annual loss, Sony is turning some of its focus towards selling more displays to the medical segment as well as developing more image sensors and batteries. The company aims to double its non-consumer product segments that earn over $1 billion each year for the company from five to ten in the next five years.

Although the company is most well known for its consumer products including the PlayStation franchise, its Vaio computers,

Asus, Acer on Deck, but Ultrabook Outlook Cut
October 7, 2011

The lofty goal of 40 percent market share for Ultrabooks in 2012 is due for a reality check, according to an analyst. Meanwhile announcements from Asus and Acer in the U.S. are imminent. First the positive news. Asus is about to roll out, as soon as next week, at least four Ultrabook models ranging in price from $999 to $1,499, according to a source familiar with the PC maker's rollout. The $999 model, for example, will come with an 11.6-inch display, a Core i5 Intel Sandy Bridge processor, and a 128GB solid-state drive. The high-end $1,499 13.3-inch model will

Sony Launches New Vaio Models for the Holidays
October 2, 2011

Sony released a variety of new computer models today for the holiday season.

These models are the mainstay laptops that Sony is releasing to do battle with Apple’s MacBook Air and other popular models for the fall selling season, which happens to be the most popular season for computer purchases.

The new options include models in the Sony Vaio S series laptops, including a 13.3-inch version of the Vaio SA (pictured at right, on left), as well as a 15.5-inch Vaio SE  (pictured at right, on right) model.

Hands-On with Sony's Tablets: They're the Sonys of Tablets!
September 6, 2011

Sony had already sort of announced its new Android tablets again and again, but at the IFA consumer-electronics show in Berlin, it did the job officially. The 10.1" model is the Tablet S, and will ship on September 16th for $499.99 (16GB) and $599.99 (32GB). The folding one with two 5.5" displays is the Tablet P, and will be sold with bundled AT&T wireless service at an unspecified date (“coming soon”) and price.

I got some hands-on time with both Sony tablets, and don't expect
