Show Report: CTIA at Super Mobility Week

After a more-than-one-year hiatus, CTIA returned to the trade-show scene at Super Mobility Week in Las Vegas in September. It jettisoned its Spring Wireless Show and its Fall MobileCon shows, merged them into one CTIA Show, and also convened various other conferences and shows to co-locate with it at the Sands Expo and Convention Center. Among the other events listed under the Super Mobility Week umbrella was the Competitive Carriers Association’s (CCA) confab that met concurrently down the Strip at the Cosmopolitan.

Redbox Throws in the Towel on Instant

The Redbox Instant streaming service, as of Tuesday, will be dead. Verizon and Redbox’s venture to compete with Netflix in the movie streaming space never really got off the ground, and now it is no more. This message was posted to the Redbox Instant homepage over the weekend:

American consumers love to pay with their credit and debit cards.  We carry more than 1.2 billion such cards in our wallets, and we rang up $4.9 trillion in electronic payments transactions at U.S. merchants last year.  Retailers know the importance of accepting electronic payments – their customers like the safety, security, and reliability of paying electronically, and they spend more using such payments because they like the rewards (such as miles or points) that come along with such spending. So when Apple announced that it is enabling payment capability in the new iPhone 6 and the Apple Watch, Apple fans – and the payments industry – all took note.  Although not new, mobile payments are taking center stage thanks to Apple’s new payments product, which comes to market in October.

Galaxy Gear S Headed to Major Carriers

Last month, Samsung unveiled the Tizen-based Gear S smartwatch, which was also showcased at the IFA 2014 in Berlin. Samsung announced the Gear S will hit all major US carriers, including AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint. AT&T even mentioned customers interested in the Gear S can check it out at 125 retail locations across the US starting September 26th. T-Mobile also mentioned the SIM-enabled smartwatch will go on sale sometime in October.

Apple iPhone 6 pre-order Starts Friday

Just to remind everyone who’s eyeing to get the new iPhone 6 or the iPhone 6 Plus on September 19, preorders for Apple’s latest iPhone has just been opened. You can place your order from Apple,Verizon, Sprint, AT&T or T-Mobile. Be quick, though, because I’m pretty sure  stock will quickly run out. As of this writing, all three U.S. carriers have opened up their preorder sites while all Apple Store are still down [Ed. I just ordered mine through the Apple Store app. The website continues to be down.]

Moto X+1 press render makes an appearance

Motorola has scheduled an event on 4th of September where the company is expected to unveil a number of products, including the highly rumored Moto X+1. Recently, the now-retired @evleaks aka Evan Blass has posted a press render of the upcoming Moto X+1. The leaked images also shows the device with a wood back, as well as a Verizon logo on the back suggesting that it will launch on the Big Red.

Walmart Permanently Drops iPhone 5C, 5S Prices

Walmart has significantly reduced the price of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, starting today. According to a new report from CNET, the retailer slashed the price of the iPhone 5s to $99, while the iPhone 5c now comes with a $29 price tag. It’s worth noting that these prices require customers to sign a two-year contract with AT&T, Verizon or Sprint.
