Best Buy isn't pulling out of Canada completely, like its fellow Minneapolis-based competitor Target recently did. But Best Buy has announced that it will close 66 of its "Future Shop" locations in Canada, and will convert the remaining locations to Best Buy stores.
Target has moved ahead with previously announced layoffs at its headquarters in Minneapolis, dropping 1,700 jobs, and opting not to fill an additional 1,300 positions, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.
Target is planning a restructuring that it will include cutting of "several thousand" jobs, according to multiple media reports Tuesday.
Best Buy, building on what it calls the success of its Teen Tech Center in Minneapolis,Chicago, Miami and San Antonio, this month opened new ones in Seattle, Jersey City, New Jersey, and Washington, and will open an eighth, in Denver, this week.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported Thursday that the documentation of Minneapolis’ bid to host the 2018 Super Bowl has been delivered to all 32 NFL owners on brand-new iPads, furnished for the Minnesota Vikings by sponsor Best Buy. “A handful of NFL executives” also received the iPads. The article did not specify which version of the iPad was gifted.
First Tech, an Apple-only retailer in Minneapolis, will close later this month, the Star Tribune newspaper reported. The store opened in 1977.
