New Best Buy Co. Inc. digital chief Stephen Gillett just got a whole lot busier.

The former Starbucks executive, already tasked with beefing up Best Buy's digital operations, will now also oversee the consumer electronic retailer's multibillion-dollar global marketing machine. The move came after Best Buy said Wednesday that Barry Judge, executive vice president and chief marketing officer, left the company.

Best Buy’s got its work cut out for it. Recently it reported a 30% drop in quarterly profit, and its stock took a hit when it announced that its sales had dropped for five consecutive quarters.

It’s up against competition from online retailers like Amazon, and that leaves it struggling to find a reason to be. It has reacted by closing underperforming stores and setting up smaller stores called Best Buy Mobile. Salvation could come in tablets and smartphones.

Best Buy announced Thursday that it has promoted a pair of top executives.

Best Buy later this month will begin using the popular social networking site Twitter to help answer customers' questions about products.
