Retailers may soon as well. The European Union's Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive would require manufacturers to finance the collection and recycling of used electronics. In addition, its Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive would ban the use of lead, mercury and cadmium in electronics by 2006. Both Directives are motivated by concerns that electronics pose environmentally when discarded.
