By Janet PinkertonAmid layoffs and lowering of earnings forecasts, CTIA's Wireless 2001 tradeshow, held last month in Las Vegas, was a surprisingly optimistic and energized event. It felt like the industry was staring down a Class IV river rapid—hopeful, challenged and, wisely, not a little afraid. The cause of excitement and fear was the industry migration to third-generation, high-speed data-capable networks—a capital intensive, multi-phase, multi-technology effort that is beginning here in the U.S. amid a recessionary market. I couldn't tell if those of us at Wireless 2001 were fiddling while Rome burned or participating in the next economy-stimulating technology advance. Time will tell. Nonetheless, carriers
