DSI executive vice president Jerry Satoren painted a rosier profit-landscape picture for 2012 vs. 2011 for independent dealers who comprise the customer base for the Consumer Electronics division he has headed since a sales reorganization in January separated CE and the company’s satellite businesses into two groups.

Distributor DSI Systems rounded out its series of four regional 2011 Expos with a buying and educational event in Orange County, Calif. June 15, making a strong case to its independent dealer clients to board the connectivity bandwagon in their showrooms as a means to better profitability.

Less than a month after offering Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 sound for Netflix on the PlayStation 3, Dolby said products using Sonic Solutions’ RoxioNow entertainment platform will get the surround-sound format as well. Sonic will make Dolby Digital Plus-enabled content available via its cloud-based digital locker system for connected devices. “RoxioNow is designed to help studios, device makers, and retailers bring outstanding entertainment to connected devices,” said David Cook, GM of RoxioNow for Sonic Solutions.

Starting Oct. 18 Netflix subscribers using the PlayStation 3 will be able to stream content with 5.1 Dolby surround sound, with more devices able to do surround sound in the future, Netflix said.

“One of the areas we’re most excited about is the online delivery channel,” said John Griffin, director of connected devices for Dolby. “There’s a lot of room for improved sound for streaming, and this is the start. Over time we expect a broader range of devices to handle this.”
