When a Product Becomes Something More
The day I met Draper's Nocturne Projector Screen at CEDIA
Every booth I visited at CEDIA 11 had a product I was interested in seeing. But there was only one product I was excited to meet; that was Draper's Nocturne.
Yes, I did say meet. To set the scene, Draper Inc. has had a great presence on Twitter thanks to Draper's Advertising Manager Penny Sitler, @DraperInc. She shares great information and is a frequent participant in AV chats.
A few weeks before CEDIA, a new Draper account showed up with a distinctly different voice. The @Draper_Nocturne announced to the world that it was a Tweeting projector screen that would be at CEDIA. This was a wisecracking projector screen that interacted with numerous twitter users, never breaking character.
Tweets ranged from industry jokes:
"Projector lifts R SO stuck up-except when stuck down #LameCEHumor #CEDIA11 @Draperinc #3664 #avtweeps www.draperinc.com/go/CustomLifts.htm"
To just plain randomly funny:
"I told you kids-no riding up and down by grabbing my fabric-at least not without tickets. #FairIsFair #CEDIA11 @Draperinc #3664 #avtweeps."
You can read a little bit more on the specifics of the Draper Nocturne outdoor projector screen at Draper's blog.
As soon as I made it to the show floor I headed to the Draper Inc. booth, as I was nearly convinced that projectors had developed sentience and I was about to meet a living, breathing, Tweeting, projector screen. Instead, I pulled back the curtain and discovered that Draper's Terry Coffey was the wizard behind the @Draper_Nocturne. But unlike the Wiz, Terry is no disappointment.
Terry Coffey's role at Draper encompasses technical publications and media relations. He also has a background in radio journalism and magazine editing, so creativity and personality are in his nature. @Draper_Nocturne is not the first anonymous Twitter account Coffey has created. He has admitted to being the voice behind several other accounts, although for now he'd prefer to keep his personal and professional accounts separate. (Always a smart policy to have when it comes to social media). He can however be found at @tclovescricket.
