Tell Us Your Story: abode Systems - Embrace the Working at Home Lifestyle
Editor’s Note: After 20 years of working at home, abode Systems CTO Scott Beck offers up his survival guide for those that have had the “work-at-home" world suddenly thrust upon them due to the current circumstances we are living under today.
I have been working from home for the better part of 20 years, but with the massive influx of people around the world who are experiencing this lifestyle for the first time, here is some of my best advice for getting through these challenging and unfamiliar times:
- Make sure you shower at least once per day. Yes really! It is far too easy to fall into the trap of starting your workday and ending your workday forgetting to shower. A day without a shower doesn’t just make you feel horrible, the smell is simply unfair to your family. We’re all in this together, don’t be unfair.
- Go outside at least once per day because getting out of the house is essential during these trying times. Go for a walk, run, ride, or participate in some other outdoor activity. Even if you have a Peleton or a great Zwift set up, go out and get some sunlight. Being outside is refreshing and will keep you motivated while you work from home.
- Don’t feel guilty that you are able to practice home life tasks when you would typically be working. This is one of the best things about working from home. Embrace it. Get your work done but also make the most of your time at home. Do laundry, wash dishes, and spend more time with your loved ones and pets during the day. Work early or work late, just get your work done, and don’t worry about letting it all intertwine with home life.
Bonus tip: Call your work colleagues for random chats. Video calls are the best in my opinion. No agenda needed; just call and chat. It's great for everyone and will keep your whole team motivated. There is no communal water cooler at home, so you have to put in the effort to keep the communication flowing.
