Heard the buzz about Pinterest but have no idea what it is? Don't worry, in this three part series, we'll not only tell you what Pinterest is, but show you the step by step basics of how to navigate the website and give you tips on how to use it to benefit your business.
Pinterest is the relatively new social media site that allows its users to create multiple online collages, or "pinboards", with other Pinterest members. Part of the site's appeal is that it is visual based. You can create your dream living room, perfect closet, or the greatest comic book collection in the blink of an eye. Pinterest allows you to lose track of time pinning images rather than stalking status updates and followers. It creates a positive escape, and has become one of the best tools for referral traffic.
In January of 2012, Pinterest generated more referral traffic then Google+, Linkedin, Reddit, and YouTube combined. At the moment, it brings in 3 percent referral traffic, not far behind the 3.1 percent referral traffic Twitter brings in. Not to mention that within a month, Pinterest has gone from 5 million users to nearly 10 million users, and isn't slowing down anytime soon.
Bottom line? Pinterest is simple, creative, and becoming a great marketing tool for businesses.
1) After going to www.Pinterest.com, at the top of the web page click the "Request Invitation" button, and put in an email address. Pinterest does this to keep the site "exclusive," but they will get back to you usually within the first couple of hours.
* If you want to get used to the site and how it works, I would suggest creating a personal profile first to act as a "demo page."
2) Once you have received your invite, set up your profile.
The first time you use the website, it will take you through a series of steps.
-You can log into Pinterest using Facebook or Twitter, but if the site represents your business, you may want to just use your email adress.
- Next, click on images that your business represents or that you are interested in. It will show you people who have similar interests.
-The last step is to create general names for your first pinboards (ex. "Recipes", "Kitchen Gadgets", "Food I Hope To Try", etc.)
-If a business profile, make sure the photo is the logo or appropriate representation of your company, your business name is properly displayed, and that you connect your other professional social sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and your business' website.
-Be sure to write a paragraph or two about the business in the "About" section of your Pinterest Profile.
* All of the information provided can be edited at any point in time. Just be sure not to change your name too many times.
There are two ways to "follow" on Pinterest.
-Underneath the photo on each profile, there is the button that says "Follow All," meaning you can follow all of the person's pin boards, comments, mentions, and likes.
-Or, you can simply just follow a few of the pinboards without following the specific profile. Just click on the "Follow" button on the board you are interested in.
Repin, Like, and Comment:
If you see an image you like, you can choose to either "Repin" it, "Like" it, or "Comment" on it.
-The "Like" and "Comment" features work exactly like Facebook. The "Comment" feature hasn't quite caught on yet, but is a great tool to help engage with followers and potential customers, so be sure to use it.
* You can also mention other "pinners" like Twitter, if you just use the @ symbol in front of the name.
-The "Repin" button is self explanatory. If you see an image you would like to add to one of your pinboards, click "Repin," choose what themed board you want it to appear on, and it will appear on your chosen pinboard.
