They can be the bane of your existence and the love of your life all at once. Online reviews are just one of those things that remains entirely out of anyone’s control. Yet, those few words penned by some random customer and posted online next to a five-star-scale rating can flip a business on its proverbial head—for better or worse.
And now, according to a new study from ReportLinker, we know that consumers place a great deal of faith in what other online reviewers have to say, whether it’s something written by a fellow Yelp user, a consumer association, or something posted by Aunt Sally or Uncle Waldo on Facebook.
It’s terrifying, but this is the world that we live in. Especially considering that, according to the report, electronics is by far the most popular category for online reviews with 71 percent of the mentions.
